Sustainability is NOT New: It’s Ancient Wisdom Redefined

Sustainability is NOT New It’s Ancient Wisdom Redefined

Living a low-impact life might sound like the latest flex, full of complex certifications and expensive products. But in several cultures around the world, mindful living has been woven into the fabric of life. More so for us in India, where the ethos of sustainability is truly ancient.

Reverence for Nature: More Than Just Trees

In the Indian ethos, nature is not just a resource to be used—it is divine. Rivers like the Ganga are considered goddesses, shrubs like Tulsi (Holy Basil) are sacred, and even animals are revered. This belief system teaches us respect for every being on the planet. Nature inspires us to take only what we need and to give back where possible. This led to inherently sustainable practices:

Zero Waste Kitchens

Traditional Indian cooking and eating leaves very little waste. Banana leaves serve as plates that are compostable. Food scraps often feed community animals. This way, everything is used, nothing is wasted. Cyclical thinking was the default setting in Indian kitchens.

Ayurveda Centres Around Balance

Our ancient system of medicine relies entirely on herbs and natural ingredients, promoting health without chemical substitutes. It’s a deep commitment to clean, non-toxic products that are good for humans and the planet. Ayurveda is rooted in clean personal care aligned with your body type (dosha: the equilibrium of bio energies). Basically, Ayurveda is an ancient scientific guide to naturally bio-hacking your well-being.

Simplicity and Moderation (Aparigraha)

One of the foundational principles in Indian philosophy is Aparigraha. It translates roughly to non-possessiveness or non-hoarding. Competitive consumerism was never a part of our culture. Aparigraha emphasizes owning only what you need to live comfortably and leaving the rest for others. In our modern world of fast fashion and rapid consumption, this powerful idea reminds us that less is truly more.

Community and Sharing (Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam)

The phrase Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam is still taught in most schools, but as we get engrossed in the race of life, it fades into a concept rather than a practice. Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam means ‘The whole world is one family.’ This extends our responsibility beyond our own home to the community and the planet. The OG concept of global citizenship and radical empathy has been ingrained in our culture for centuries.

Not a Solo Journey, Neither a Hustle

Building a Sustainable UniverseTM can feel overwhelming. That’s just because it requires collective effort to consistently take small, mindful steps. Indian heritage teaches us that this can achieve a monumental shift. It only begins with respecting the planet, choosing simplicity, and recognizing that our choices impact the entire global family.

When you choose a sustainable alternative, you are supporting:

  • Ethical labour and fair wages for the people who made it.
  • The environment where the materials were sourced.
  • A cleaner future for everyone in our global family.

What could be better to begin making better choices easier for you than our own roots? We find incredible inspiration in the traditional Indian way of life.

At Sustainable UniverseTM, we have taken that ancient wisdom and done the modern heavy lifting for you. We vet the products, ensure the transparency you deserve, and present you with the best choices for to live in harmony with our planet.
